Toothless Tottenham laid low by Bournemouth’s teenage defender Huijsen | Premier League

Teenage defender Dean Huissen has become Bournemouth’s youngest Premier League top scorer as he led his side to victory over Tottenham at the Vitality Stadium.

Andoni Iraola’s Cherries upset title hopefuls Arsenal and Manchester City in two of their previous three games on home soil.

The Spain Under-21 international, aged 19 years and 235 days, secured another scalp for the club with a 17th-minute winner as erratic Spurs suffered yet another setback in a shaky season so far.

Bournemouth leapfrogged Ange Postecoglou’s visitors into ninth position after a deserved run that should have been more comfortable.

Ryan Christie hit the frame and the impressive home side failed to capitalize on a host of chances, while toothless Tottenham created a slight lead. Inconsistent spurs beat champions Manchester City 4-0 in their previous away game but it was their only win from five games in all competitions before the trip to Dorset.

Dominic Solanke was ruled fit to face his former club after missing Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Fulham through illness, with captain Son Heung-min dropping to the bench as part of three changes. The north London club started with the upper hand and after the recalled Dejan Kuluszewski fired straight at goalkeeper Kepa Arizabalaga, Solanke shot wide after being released by stand-in captain James Maddison. Bournemouth looked lively on the counter attack and went ahead.

Spurs keeper Fraser Forster initially produced a superb save to deny Evanilsson after Radu Dragusin had pulled away, but from the ensuing corner taken by Markus Tavernier, Huissen, a summer signing from Juventus, arrived unmarked at the back post to nod at home.

Tavernier had the ball in the net 14 minutes after the opener but was clearly offside before later seeing a close-range header from Milos Kerkez’s cross cleared by Forster. Despite Tottenham’s shortcomings, Postecoglou opted for changes at the break.

His side got back on the front foot despite still looking susceptible at the break, with Justin Kluivert scoring a hat-trick of penalties in Saturday’s 4-2 win at Wolves, coming close to doubling Bournemouth’s lead.

Son replaced Pape Sarr in the 57th minute and immediately upped Tottenham’s tempo. The South Korea international finished on the rebound two minutes after being introduced following Kuluszewski’s initial effort, but was cleared offside before later slipping into Maddison who narrowly curled over.

Fellow substitute Pedro Porro tested Kepa with a powerful strike before Christie hit the base of the left post at the other end.

Tottenham survived a serious scare 18 minutes from time when Evanilson’s close-range finish was disallowed for offside after Forster’s risky pass to Kuluszewski was intercepted.

Bournemouth should have put the game beyond Spurs, with Tavernier and substitute Dango Ouattara wasting excellent opportunities by firing over. The lapses provided plenty of tension in the six minutes of added time but didn’t matter much in the end as Spurs couldn’t muster a meaningful attempt to grab a point.
