Calls to investigate police behaviour after journalists pulled over and questioned

The NSW Police Commissioner has defended the actions of a highway patrol who stopped a 7NEWS crew in Cooma at the request of disgraced former police officer Christian White.

The former officer was found guilty of manslaughter two weeks ago following the tragic death of Claire Nowland, a 95-year-old grandmother, at a nursing home in Cooma last year.

White was approached by a 7NEWS reporter Thursday who asked him if he had anything to say to the Knowlands.

He didn’t — instead, he called the local police, telling them incorrectly that the news crew was filming children at a daycare center.

A short time later, the news crew was pulled over by highway patrol and given a random breath test before the officer explained that there had been calls that they had been filming the daycare.

White was revealed as the man who called out his former colleagues to the journalist.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb defended the police move on Friday, saying it was part of their job.

“They (give breath tests) every day of the week and especially this time of year,” she said.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a member of the community and that’s all I’m going to mention.”

Police Minister Yasmin Katli said she agreed with Webb’s comments.

“We will never get in the way of the important work that the media does,” she said.

“A police officer responded to a complaint and, as stated, did his job.

“I watched the body worn video and I have no concerns about this behavior.”

But some are calling for an investigation into the response, suggesting it may have blurred the lines of what is appropriate, with the opposition joining calls from the media union for an independent investigation.

“The optics of what happened in Cooma is something that needs to be investigated,” NSW Legislative Council Opposition Leader Damien Tudehope said.

“If there’s an overrun, legitimately, that should be investigated because the optics didn’t look good.”
