Gunman wounds two children at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Oroville, California


A gunman shot and wounded two children at an elementary school in California before shooting himself, the local sheriff said.

The shooting happened Wednesday at the Feather River Seventh-day Adventist School in Oroville, California, located about 56 miles north of Sacramento, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said.

Megan McMann, spokeswoman for the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, said officers responded quickly to reports of an unidentified elderly man shooting at students on campus at 1:09 p.m.

By the time officers arrived, the man was dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound, McMann said.

“Two students suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to local hospitals for treatment,” McMann said, adding that he did not know their conditions.

A motive for the shooting is not yet known, nor has the shooter been identified.

In a social media postthe Butte County Sheriff’s Office said the students were taken to a nearby church.

McMann said the investigation is ongoing and officials are trying to determine if the suspected shooter had any connection to the school.

Feather River Seventh-day Adventist School, operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, serves children from kindergarten through eighth grade, ages five to 13, according to its website.
