Man ‘armed with piece of wood’ shot, Tasered during backyard altercation with police

A man who police allege was armed with a piece of wood and “combative” was shot and Tasered during an altercation with officers in Brisbane.

Officers were called to the property on Tamar Street in Annerley about 9.13am (10.13am AEDT) after residents found a 26-year-old they didn’t know in their backyard.

Police said the 26-year-old was “armed with a piece of wood in an agitated state”.

The man allegedly lunged at a 40-year-old senior constable’s handgun and, during a struggle, shot the officer in the thigh.

A first-year constable then shot the 26-year-old in the stomach area.

Police allege the man was still being combative and a Taser was deployed to subdue him while other officers restrained him.

During the altercation, the first-year officer was allegedly bitten by the man.

The first-year constable then applied a tourniquet to the senior constable. Police said medical assistance was immediately given to everyone injured.

The man and the two officers were taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The man remains in a serious condition.

The senior constable is currently in a stable condition and the first-year constable has since been discharged from hospital.

A crime scene has been declared and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman said policing was an “inherently dangerous occupation”.

“I thank all police for the great work they do each day. Particularly those officers involved today and those who assisted their colleagues,” he said.

“I would particularly like to thank the first year constable and other officers who attended for their actions in providing critical first aid to the seriously injured officer while responding on an ongoing threat.”

The matter is under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
